Song in the City is pioneering a ground-breaking project in collaboration with the The Maudsley Charity, a mental health organisation, focusing on young composers who will create new songs to texts chosen by (or written by) mental-health service users from South East London.

Singers and pianists are taking part in this project. They will interact in the creative process by collaborating with the composers and mental health service users to help them create new songs for performances in a series of concerts in 2014 and beyond. This project will involve coaching from esteemed tutors (Sarah Walker CBE, Raymond Yiu, Gavin Roberts) and will involve workshop activities to encourage interaction between groups of people who normally would not interact with one another. By participants stepping outside their usual comfort zones, we hope to tap into the high creative potential of all parties concerned. It is hoped to create media attention to increase awareness of both the genre of Song and Mental Illness.
